A woman was left terrified when her neighbour demanded more than £700 ($900) from her after her dog destroyed one of his gadgets. But after seeking advice on Reddit’s Legal Advice forum, the tables were turned and the menacing neighbour was forced to pay her more than £1,500 ($2,000).

Online, the woman explained that her neighbor had a habit of flying his drone low around her house to tease her husky — but the frustrated dog eventually managed to catch the drone. She posted: “Today my neighbor was banging on my door yelling obscenities and screaming at me. When I finally got him to stop yelling, I discovered he was flying his drone in my backyard again and this time my dog had finally managed to destroy it.”

She continued: “He claimed this was a $900 drone and that I had to pay him on the spot. I refused and closed the door in his face. A few hours later the police showed up to pick up the drone; it was still in my yard, but my dog completely ignored it once it stopped buzzing.”

The woman won her case against her neighbor in small claims court

According to the woman, the neighbor told police she had been refused access to her yard to retrieve the drone, but she insisted this was not true as the neighbor had never asked for it. The woman also added that her neighbor “had a history” of flying his drone low over her yard to harass her dog, which she had previously reported to police.

She said: “I asked him several times to stop but he always refused and told me I don’t own the sky over my garden… the police didn’t say he couldn’t fly it in my garden but did. Ask him to stop doing that to avoid conflict. That only seemed to encourage him.”

A few weeks later, she shared an update that her neighbor had decided to take her to court over the drone issue, prompting her to seek legal advice. She said, “My mother-in-law is a paralegal secretary, so I was able to get a free consultation with an attorney where she works to ask some questions about what to bring and how to prepare.”

She continued, “He seemed genuinely amused that my neighbor was even trying to file a lawsuit. He also suggested I file a countersuit and how I could possibly add additional damages.” The lawyer emphasized that she lived within five miles of an airport and that her neighbor was not only flouting the law, but may not have registered his drone for the flight. The woman also argued that her dog could have died if it was hit by the drone and provoked.
