LAS VEGAS — While the NHL Draft was already underway on day two, the Michigan hockey team’s commitments were far from finalized.

Early on day two, Wolverine committed and defenseman Gabriel Eliasson was drafted with the seventh pick in the second round, 39th overall, to the Ottawa Senators.

Eliasson is a player you can’t pass up, and with his second overall pick in the draft, the Senators made sure he wouldn’t slip through their fingers.

At 6-foot-1, Eliasson is a beast on the ice, consistently winning puck battles and using his height as a defender to defend his team. Eliasson is from Sweden and doesn’t have much experience playing hockey in North America, but his talent on the ice and his humility off the ice speak volumes.

He plans to play a year in the USHL before donning the blue and yellow, but it’s crucial to his game to get that experience in the United States before he heads to college hockey.

As the second Michigan player to declare for the 2024 NHL Draft, Eliasson is holding his own — not just literally, but in the way he plays his game.
