Halifax MP Fillmore is leaving federal politics ahead of expected mayoral election

OTTAWA — Liberal MP Andy Fillmore says he will not return to the House of Commons in the fall.

Fillmore was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Halifax in the 2015 election that brought Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to power.

Fillmore, a former city planner, is expected to run for mayor of Halifax in the October municipal election.

In his final speech in the House of Representatives, Fillmore says he is looking to the future and that there is still a lot of work to do for Halifax.

He says he will continue to push for things like opening up Canada Post sites in the city for housing.

During his time in Parliament, Fillmore served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers of Democratic Institutions, Canadian Heritage, Infrastructure and Industry.
