Jets select Swedish defenseman, three forwards in NHL Draft

The Winnipeg Jets have added a Swedish defenseman to their roster at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas.

The Jets selected 18-year-old Alfons Freij with the 37th pick in the second round of the draft.

Freij played most of last season with the Vaxjo Lakers in the Swedish J20 Nationell League. The left-handed defender scored 14 goals and provided 19 assists in 40 games. He also scored six points in seven games during Sweden’s gold medal run at the U18 World Championship.

In the fourth round, the Jets took winger Kevin He with the 109e selection. He scored 31 goals and had 22 assists in 64 games with the Niagara IceDogs last season. He is the highest NHL draftee ever born in China.

The Jets also added Finnish forward Markus Loponen in the fifth round and towering Canadian center Kieron Walton in the sixth round.
