Nick Owen, TfL’s director of buses, said:

London has the largest zero-emission bus fleet in Western Europe, with over 1,400 buses, and we are excited to welcome these 41 new electric buses from Alexander Dennis to our routes. When the entire fleet is zero-emission, we will have saved around 5 million tonnes of carbon.

The next generation Enviro400EV double-decker is 10.5 metres long and can accommodate up to 62 passengers.

Meanwhile, the Enviro100EV is classed as one of TfL’s smallest single-deckers, with 21 seats. Its compact dimensions, 8.5 metres long and 2.35 metres wide, mean it can navigate narrow residential streets with ease.

Paul Lynch, Managing Director of Stagecoach London, said:

We look forward to using these buses, which promise a step change in range and longevity. They will complement our rapidly growing electric bus fleet, while playing our part in meeting TfL and the Mayor of London’s targets, and our own Stagecoach carbon reduction commitments.

In the UK bus cycle, the Enviro400EV has a benchmark energy efficiency of 0.67 kWh/km, while the Enviro100EV has a benchmark efficiency of 0.54 kWh/km.

In addition, the models have a guaranteed energy throughput of up to 1.6 GWh and 1.2 GWh respectively.

This new generation of electric Alexander Dennis buses also meet the latest versions of the TfL bus safety standard.

Ben Werth, Group Sales & Business Development Manager for Alexander Dennis, said:

Even before the first London-spec demonstration buses have hit the road, Stagecoach has already placed orders, recognising the potential for our next generation buses to deliver excellent total cost of ownership with an electric drive system that can last for two full TfL route contract terms without the need for battery replacement.
