Hamilton police have arrested a Brampton man in connection with a fatal shooting last year that they say was the result of a drug deal gone wrong.

Tito Kelly, 36, was found dead in an alley next to an apartment building on Herkimer Street, just off Caroline Street in downtown Hamilton, around 11 p.m. on Oct. 3, 2023.

In a press release issued Wednesday, police said they now believe the killing “was the result of a drug transaction that resulted in both parties exchanging gunfire.”

A second man also suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and was treated at the hospital.

Donte Smith, 36, of Brampton, has been arrested in connection with the incident and is charged with manslaughter. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a bail hearing.

Police suspect someone else was involved in the shooting, but no description of that person has been released.

“Hamilton Police continue to ask the public for information,” the press release said.
