A rain warning remains in effect for the island of Montreal after Wednesday’s record rainfall.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, another 15 to 25 mm of rain is expected on Thursday morning.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash flooding and waterlogging on roads,” the agency notes. “Rain warnings are issued when heavy rainfall is expected.”

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl have brought about 100mm of rain to southern Quebec in the past 24 hours.

The heavy rainfall caused chaos on the roads and forced the closure of many highways, including parts of the Decarie Expressway and Highway 30.

Several people had to abandon their vehicles due to high water levels on the roads.

The previous rainfall record for July 10 was 32.5mm in 1945; on July 11 it was 40.6mm in 2009.
