For most people, it’s a piece of cake to figure out that something happened after a relationship ends. It seems like there’s no romance left. But what if you find out that your ex is actually your half-brother?

Now That is a big deal.

Sadly, this nightmare became a reality for 39-year-old Victoria Hill after she started researching her family tree and discovered something she probably wished she hadn’t known.

And to add fuel to the fire, the clinical social worker from Connecticut, USA, received this life-changing news via text message.

You’re probably wondering how you could end up in this situation. It’s a mind-boggling story, to say the least.

Take a look at this:

Victoria explained that she reconnected with her childhood sweetheart at a reunion 20 years ago, when she decided to open up about a recent revelation that had shocked her family.

When her mother, Maralee, was trying to conceive, she went to fertility doctor Burton Caldwell for help.

The doctor told her he would inseminate sperm from an anonymous medical student, but in reality it was his own sperm.

Neither Maralee nor Victoria had any idea about this until their daughter took a DNA test with 23andMe to find out what was causing some strange health issues she was experiencing.

To the 39-year-old woman’s surprise, it turned out that the man who raised her was not her father.

She later discovered that her family was much larger than she initially thought, as she has 23 siblings who also claim to have been conceived using Caldwell’s sperm.

What a story for a school reunion, huh?

As Victoria poured out her heart about the shocking news, her ex-boyfriend pricked up his ears.

Victoria Hill, 39, was left stunned when she realised she had been ‘intimate’ with her half-brother (CNN)

He saw some similarities and decided to take the same genetic test as she did. This resulted in the boy later texting his high school girlfriend, bluntly saying, “You’re my sister.”

“I moved to Wallingford when I was in high school. We were best friends for years. We eventually decided to start dating and then we went our separate ways for college,” Victoria told NBC Connecticut.

“We never got married and never had children, but he is someone I would definitely consider, even now, if life had taken us that way.”

She said she now looks back on her “whole high school experience” differently because this strange development “tarnishes the whole thing.” She added: “I’m just going to say it: I had an intimate relationship with my half-brother.”

“I was traumatized by this,” Victoria also told CNN. “Now I look at pictures of people thinking, well, if he could be my brother or sister, then anyone could be my brother or sister.”

It turns out that, unbeknownst to her, she was attending primary school with another sibling and frequenting a local deli run by twins she is related to.

Fertility doctor Burton Caldwell is said to have fathered more than 20 children with his own sperm, including Victoria and her ex (CNN)

Janine Pierson, one of Victoria’s other half-siblings, takes action against the retired doctor.

She talks about what happened when she told her mother the news: “We both cried for a few minutes because it felt like a violation of their rights.”

Janine courageously confronted Caldwell, who she said “made no apologies whatsoever.”

She described the interaction as awkward and said he admitted he “never thought about it the way he should have.”

Although there is no federal law on the subject and only 13 states have any protection against fertility fraud, Janine is taking legal action against the retired doctor.

She and her mother Doreen are suing Caldwell on several counts, including negligent infliction of emotional distress, abuse and failure to obtain informed consent.

They are seeking damages of at least $15,000 (£11,700).

“It shouldn’t just be the Wild West where these doctors can do whatever they want,” Janine added.

Caldwell and his attorney Patrick J. Sweeney “deny all allegations.”
