Archdiocese of Toronto – Youth travel to shrine of martyrs to ‘reawaken’ their spiritual lives

On the weekend of June 22-23, 2024, young adults from the Archdiocese of Toronto gathered at the Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario, for their first-ever Spiritus Ministry Retreat: Awakening. Over 80 participants from all walks of life gathered to experience a weekend of encounter with the Lord. This was an opportunity to retreat from our secular world and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, to disconnect from the noise of the outside world and find the silence and hear where God is calling them next.

The retreat leaders provided insights into imitating the lives of the martyrs, discerning vocations, and discovering our charisms. The Sisters of Life gave up their time and accompanied the participants for the weekend, helping them deepen their prayer lives. Fr. Gregory Carruthers of St. Augustine’s Seminary spoke about the different seeds for deepening devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the shrine’s own Fr. John O’Brien spoke about using Ignatian spirituality to discern God’s will.

Being on the grounds of the Holy Canadian Martyrs was incredibly special for the retreat participants as they were able to look beyond the rain and praise God for His goodness, grace and amazing miracle! This sanctifying weekend provided ample time to reflect, grow stronger in their faith and most importantly, be with Jesus.
