It’s more of a “smog” problem for Edmonton than a smoke problem from wildfires. But the city and surrounding regions are under an “Air Quality Statement” issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The foggy conditions over the area are due to pollutants trapped beneath the hot air in the sky. Air quality is expected to improve Wednesday evening.

Further north, an Air Quality Advisory (one level higher than a Statement) is in effect for the High Level, Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan regions.

This advice has been issued due to smoke development from forest fires in those areas and air quality is expected to remain poor over the coming days, especially in areas near active fires.
