Ottawa police closed a portion of Somerset Street East and Nelson Street Wednesday morning due to a gas leak.

A call came in to 9-1-1 at approximately 10:11 a.m., Ottawa Fire Department media officer Nick DeFazio told CityNews. There were reports of a “hissing” sound in the 200 block of Somerset Street East.

Once on site, emergency services found that a 15cm low-pressure gas line had been cut by an excavator carrying out work in the area.

Firefighters evacuated four homes on Somerset Street East and created a “public exclusion zone” during the operation. The area is largely residential and is near the University of Ottawa campus.

Enbridge crews arrived on scene at 11:55 a.m. and “pinch” the line shut to stop the leak.

The roads in the area have now reopened.
