Loyle Carner review: A pulsating performance after a weather delay at Halifax Piece Hall

Acclaimed hip-hop artist Loyle Carner delivered a sensational performance at The Piece Hall on Tuesday night.

Last night’s headline set was delayed by 20 minutes due to the threat of a storm, the staff provided professional and calm support. The bars were temporarily closed, much to the disappointment of the fans, but thankfully the weather threat was short-lived.

After the clouds cleared, one of the UK’s biggest young stars took to the stage for a night the 6,000 fans in attendance would never forget.

I have to admit that I was initially sceptical that Loyle Carner’s relaxed yet thought-provoking music would suit the venue, as all the other acts I had seen at the Piece Hall before were full of energy.

However, I soon had to take my words back when he took the stage with his first song, filling the unique venue.

He apologized for the delay after the first song, saying, “Sorry, we’re late, but we made it!” as the crowd cheered, then explained that it was his first time in Halifax.

Carner’s performance was packed with crowd favourites including Speed of Plight, Hate, Ain’t Nothing Changed, Yesterday and Loose Ends, followed by a stunning finale with Ottolenghi.

The set was entertaining, intense and emotion driven, his tracks are fueled with deep political and personal thoughts. He spoke openly about his children and how toxic masculinity affected his childhood.

He really made the audience feel like they were getting to know him as an artist on a personal level, the whole show felt very intimate without sacrificing the entertainment and energy.

The stars were out in force last night, with cast members from the ITV soap among those enjoying the show Emmerdale.
