Edmonton police officers have arrested and charged a person after leaving his dog unattended in a vehicle on Wednesday while temperatures outside reached 36 degrees.

It happened Wednesday in the parking lot of West Edmonton Mall. Animal Control Peace Officers had to break the window to rescue the dog and take it into their care.

According to officials, the driver returned to the vehicle 45 minutes later, where EPS officers arrested him and charged him with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

Police are again warning pet owners not to leave their pets unattended in vehicles during extreme heat. On a hot day, even vehicles parked in the shade with the windows open can reach a staggering 120 degrees within minutes, police said.

According to the City of Edmonton, between May 2024 and July 8eThe animal protection agency has received 49 complaints about pets in hot cars.
