Nearly 40 residents of Fyzabad district were trapped in their homes on Wednesday morning when a damaged bridge at St John’s Branch Trace near the floodgates collapsed, cutting off about seven houses.

According to Dr Lackram Bodoe, Member of Parliament for the area, a sick resident was unable to seek medical attention this morning as the bridge is now impassable to vehicles.

He said: “This happened despite many requests to the authorities to correct the situation before it became a disaster.”

Bodoe further noted that a temporary crossing was made with a boat volunteered by a resident of the village.

He said the Siparia Borough Corporation Disaster Management Unit team was on the ground to clean the riverbank for safer travel.

However, Bodoe said a more permanent solution is urgently needed.

The MP said: “I am calling for this to be treated as a disaster and for a temporary Bailey bridge to be installed as soon as possible to provide urgent assistance to stranded residents, pending a more permanent solution. I am also calling for the collapsed bridge to be removed and the watercourse cleared to prevent another flood disaster when the rains come.”

According to Bodoe, the water supply in the area has also been affected.

“The water connection was broken due to the collapsed bridge and I also urge WASA to intervene urgently to restore the water supply,” he said.
