Gastown pedestrian pilot officially opened

Gastown pedestrian pilot officially opened

A pedestrian pilot project is now open in one of Vancouver’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.

Parts of Water Street will be closed to traffic starting this month as part of a city project.

Mayor Ken Sim previously said the project is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize the neighborhood and make it a “people-friendly, safe and clean destination.”

“By transforming Water Street into an active pedestrian zone this summer, we have a great opportunity to showcase the vibrant businesses and attractions Gastown has to offer,” Sim said in a statement in February.

The project included various maintenance works, including cosmetic adjustments to the street lighting and the replacement of the iconic red bricks.

The city has indicated that there will be dedicated vehicle access points along Water Street for the duration of the project, which runs through August.

The official opening of the pilot project is scheduled for Thursday at Maple Tree Square.
