A five-year-old boy from Clairmont, Alta., was killed Saturday afternoon in a five-vehicle crash in Grande Prairie, Alta.

Grande Prairie RCMP arrived on the scene of the multi-vehicle crash on Highway 43 near the intersection with Highway 43X just before 3 p.m., a news release said Sunday.

The accident involved five vehicles and left several people injured.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Other patients were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The number of patients and their statuses were not available, the RCMP said.

Police remained on the scene for hours investigating, with traffic being diverted in both directions. Normal traffic flow resumed early Sunday morning.

According to the RCMP, initial investigation indicates that a Ford F-350 pickup truck was traveling east on Highway 43 and was approaching the intersection with Highway 43X. The truck then collided with vehicles stopped at a red light.

The other vehicles involved were two pickup trucks, an SUV and a truck.

“The RCMP extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” the RCMP said in the release.
