TORONTO — Luka Gavran’s goalkeeping club and teammates immediately offered support when the young Toronto FC goalkeeper conceded a strange goal during the 2-1 loss to Atlanta United on June 20.

Gavran, who replaced No. 1 Sean Johnson, who was on international tour with the United States for the Copa America, was about to put the ball into play in the dying minutes when the score was 1-1, when things suddenly went wrong.

The 24-year-old Gavran failed to notice Senegalese forward Jamal Thiaré lurking behind him, who had lingered to take a sip from the water bottle near the goal. As Gavran dropped the ball in front of him to kick it across the field, Thiaré snuck in and stole the ball, before firing it into the unprotected net for the winning goal in the 97th minute.

“Probably the most embarrassing moment of my career,” Gavran said Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s Canadian Championship semifinal opener between TFC and Forge FC. “But a moment I’ll probably learn the most from.
