Ottawa soccer fans look forward to Canada-Argentina semi-final at Copa America

The love for this beautiful sport is greater than ever as fans of all ages are ready to cheer on the Canadian men’s soccer team as they prepare for the biggest game of their lives.

Bars have been packed for weeks for Euro 2024 and the Copa America tournament. On Tuesday night, even casual soccer fans will see a historic moment for Canada in the ultimate David versus Goliath match.

“I want Canada to win. But of course Argentina is going to win. It’s not really a competition,” said young soccer fan Hunter as he showed off his Lionel Messi Barcelona FC jersey. “This was when he was in his prime.”

The Copa semi-final will be a rematch of the opening match in which Canada lost to Argentina. That was to be expected, but the incredible run since then was not.

“For Canada, this has to be the biggest game in the history of the men’s program,” said TSN 1200’s AJ Jakubec. “To have the greatest player in the history of soccer, Lionel Messi, play and try to stop him from winning his third consecutive tournament. Argentina, number one in the world, reigning Copa America champions, reigning World Cup champions. This is just an opportunity you don’t get very often.”

Messi and his team are by far the favourites to win, but Team Canada can count on loyal supporters at the Gloucester Hornets Soccer Club.

“I think Canada is going to stay strong. You know, I think they’re going to stay strong and maybe score. Who knows?” said Carina Sharara, a member of the Hornets’ soccer club. “I’m excited for Jonathan David.”

David, who scored the lone goal that sank Peru and gave Canada its first Copa America win, grew up playing for the club and inspired many of the young kids in Ottawa who love the game.

“It’s mainly because he’s come to Hornets and knows his shirt is signed in the clubhouse that we have to support him,” Sharara said.
