Gas line severed on Montrose Street North in Cambridge

Gas line severed on Montrose Street North in Cambridge

The public was urged to avoid the Montrose Street North area of Cambridge on Tuesday afternoon after a gas main was severed.

The city of Cambridge reported that emergency protocols went into effect around noon when officials from the fire department and Enbridge Gas arrived on the scene.

Drivers and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area until further notice.

An Enbridge Gas spokesperson later confirmed that a four-inch steel natural gas line was damaged. While an investigation was underway, the utility believed the damage was caused by third-party construction.

Repairs were underway from 1:30 p.m.

Enbridge Gas initially reported that about a dozen commercial and small industrial customers in the area would experience natural gas service disruptions through Wednesday.

That number subsequently rose to 52, including some private customers.

“This increase is due to the nature of the repairs required and we are working to restore service as quickly and safely as possible,” an Enbridge Gas spokesperson said in an email statement to CityNews Kitchener.
