Toronto police have arrested a man suspected of using a knife to slash a victim in the chest and face on Friday in an unprovoked attack.

Toronto police issued a press release Monday asking for assistance in investigating the incident that occurred around 12:17 a.m. near Sunrise and Victoria Park Avenues.

Police said a suspect attacked a man in his 20s without provocation as he walked along a path. The suspect allegedly jumped on the victim’s back and punched him in the head several times, police said.

The suspect then allegedly brandished a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest and face. The victim was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they arrested 23-year-old Yusuf Erdogan of Toronto on Tuesday and charged him with assault with a weapon and use of a dangerous weapon.

He was scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.
