After their triumphant victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup, Team India now faces the daunting task of finding successors to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have retired from international T20 cricket.

The BCCI has selected a young squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with Shubman Gill leading the team. This presents an excellent opportunity for emerging talents to showcase their skills and stake a claim for future selection.

The Indian team suffered a humiliating defeat in the first T20I as they failed to achieve a modest target of 116 runs. However, they bounced back strongly in the second T20I, thanks to a brilliant century from Abhishek Sharma. This performance ensured that the Men in Blue secured a comprehensive 100-run victory over Zimbabwe.

In the final, Virat delivered a brilliant 76-run knock off just 59 balls, once again showing his class in a crucial match. Meanwhile, Rohit’s fearless and aggressive batting set the tone for strong starts in almost every match. The Indian captain finished the ICC event as the second highest run scorer and then announced his retirement, along with Virat Kohli who retired from international cricket.

According to former Zimbabwean cricketer Hamilton Masakadza, India should consider Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as replacements.

“Losing such talented players leaves a big void that will be difficult to fill. However, India has a large talent pool with a lot of potential, so finding replacements should not be too difficult. The real challenge will be to identify players who are capable of matching the exceptional performance levels of the departing stars,” Masakadza told TOI.

“I am particularly looking forward to seeing the continued growth and development of Shubman Gill. Having watched him in all three formats, I have been very impressed with his performances. He has the talent to step up and fill the void left by departing world-class players. Yashasvi too has made a promising start to his international career. These two young talents are definitely ones to watch as they work to establish themselves at the highest level,” he added.
