Exploding packages hit rural mailboxes – authorities investigating – 620 CKRM

The Saskatoon RCMP has launched an investigation after explosives were discovered in mailboxes in rural areas in the RM of Blucher and RM of Corman Park. Authorities identified the explosives as modified fireworks.

On Sunday, RCMP received a report that several mailboxes in the Sunset Estates area had been broken into, with suspicious items inside. After investigating, police confirmed that one mailbox had been damaged by an explosive device.

The following day, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the RCMP received another report of an explosive device placed in a mailbox on Rural Road 3040 in the RM of Corman Park. Subsequent investigation revealed that a total of seven explosive devices had been placed in mailboxes in the area. Six of these devices detonated, resulting in significant damage to the mailboxes.

Since the initial reports, police have found two additional damaged mailboxes, bringing the total to nine affected mailboxes. All of the incidents occurred east of Saskatoon, in areas between Highway 16 and Highway 5.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The Saskatchewan RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit is actively assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Police are asking residents not to touch any suspicious or unknown devices found in mailboxes. Anyone who finds such a device or has information about these incidents is asked to contact Saskatoon RCMP at 310-RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
