Calgary police say four men are facing charges following a year-long investigation into a 2023 kidnapping.

On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, just before 9:30 p.m., police received a call from a man reporting that a family member of his had been abducted from an unknown location. He reported that his home, in the 500 block of 4 Avenue NE, had been broken into by three people he did not know. They attacked him with a weapon and robbed him before leaving.

According to investigators, the kidnappers contacted the man by phone and demanded an undisclosed ransom for the return of his relative.

According to Calgary Police Services (CPS), officers were immediately dispatched to the scene to safely locate and rescue the victim.

An initial police investigation revealed that the incident was drug-related and that multiple people were responsible for kidnapping and holding the victim hostage.

According to police, the kidnappers gave video updates to the family, again demanding a ransom for the safe return of their loved one.

The next day, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, just after 5:00 p.m., police report that the victim was released by the kidnappers and found by police in the city center, with minor injuries.

Police arrested one man in connection with the incident at the time.

Police subsequently launched a large-scale investigation into the case, issuing 44 court orders, several search warrants, production warrants and the seizure of 29 electronic devices.

Through this work, investigators were also able to identify three other suspects they believed were responsible for both the kidnapping and the home invasion.
