The province says the risk of wildfires in forest areas west of Calgary is now high due to “extreme temperatures and a lack of precipitation.”

According to Alberta Wildfire, the conditions have prompted a fire warning for the Calgary Forest Area (CFA), a large area in southwestern Alberta that extends from areas west of Carstairs, Cochrane and Calgary to west of Pincher Creek.

This means that all active fire permits have been suspended and no new permits will be issued.

Fireworks, exploding targets and all forms of combustion, except in campfires, are prohibited.

The advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve or, if they continue to deteriorate, a fire restriction is imposed.

According to officials, there are no active forest fires in the CFA.
