The engineer went on to describe the extensive journey behind the victory, adding: “It’s an emotional one. It’s been a long, long time and he and I have worked hard to get back there. Small steps, but it’s taken a lot so far.”

When asked to pinpoint the most crucial moment in securing victory – and whether it was Hamilton’s handling of the soft tyre at the start of his final stint, which allowed him to maintain a lead over the chasing Max Verstappen – Bonnington replied: “I think it’s because the feedback he gave me about where we were in terms of the balance of the first stint (the car) wasn’t great.

“You know when push comes to shove, he’s the one who’s going to manage the tires and get you to the end.”
