Construction of Halifax lofts to start soon

According to Ed Gaskins of Echelon Resources, Inc., the public can expect construction activity at the old Halifax Elementary School after the Thanksgiving holiday. Echelon Resources, Inc. is in the process of converting the closed building into market-rate apartments.

Gaskins said yesterday that his group has secured construction financing and will now begin renovations on more than two dozen one- and two-bedroom loft-style rental units in the old school.

Echelon Resources, which bought the Mountain Road school site from the county in October for $10,000, will soon mobilize work crews to the site, Gaskins said. The company hopes to attract young professionals moving to the community, as well as retirees for the apartment complex.

The market is expected to be similar to that for Chatham Lofts, another Echelon project, which has 31 apartments.

The redevelopment of Halifax Elementary is expected to cost approximately $2.6 million, and will preserve the historic features of the old school and completely restore the exterior.

“Give us two or three weeks and we’ll show you our plans,” Gaskins said. He said that if all goes well, the Halifax Lofts project should be completed in June or July.
