Navy brings boats and booms to Esquimalt Harbour for oil spill exercise

When official-looking boats appear in Esquimalt Harbour on Wednesday, don’t worry, it’s just a practice run.

The Department of National Defence (DND) plans to hold a simulated fuel spill exercise at the Navy’s Colwood Fuelling Facility and Esquimalt Harbour on July 10 from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

According to DND, the community may hear alarms more frequently and intermittently.

This large-scale exercise is led by CFB Esquimalt’s Port Operations and Emergency Services Division and includes oil spill response boats, booms and fuel skimmers.

Such oil spill exercises are part of the base’s ongoing role and commitment to be a responsible and diligent steward of the marine environment.
