Oak Bay, Saanich Police Investigate Possible Hate Crime at UVic Faith Centre

Police are investigating after a piece of paper containing text that police said appeared to be “hate-motivated” was found at the University of Victoria’s Multifaith Centre.

The paper, discovered on July 5, was written in Arabic and English and was found at a building near Finnerty Gardens, which is home to 12 different religious communities.

The chapel is on the Oak Bay side of campus, so police in that community were called. Saanich police officers, who were already at UVic, supported the investigation.

“The contents of the document were immediately reviewed by a hate crime investigator and have also been forwarded to the RCMP Hate Crimes Unit for further analysis and to determine if other incidents have occurred in other jurisdictions,” the release said. “The Oak Bay Police Department and the Saanich Police Department take hate incidents very seriously and we are committed to a thorough investigation into this matter.”

There are currently no known suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Oak Bay police at 250-592-2424.
