St. John’s signs agreement with Ottawa to create urban park

The City of St. John’s has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ottawa to create a national urban park in the city.

According to the federal government, such parks improve access to nature and green space, complement local and regional tourism, and provide opportunities to amplify the voices and stories of indigenous peoples.

The designation will be established over the coming years through various consultations with various stakeholders.

Federal Minister Steven Guilbeault says the concept of a national urban park is a relatively new program.

He says there is only one park in the country, Rouge National Park just outside Toronto, with others in development. He says what the park looks like depends on the city and the various stakeholders, and notes that Parks Canada can move as quickly as it needs to.

Mayor Danny Breen says there is a lot of land in the city that would be a “good candidate” for the park.
