Everyone is safe after tense moments in a downtown Winnipeg skyscraper Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.

The City of Winnipeg said in a press release that when firefighters from Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived, they saw smoke and determined the fire was inside the building.

Firefighters were able to enter the building and quickly extinguish the fire. It was declared under control at 2:54 p.m.

Some residents evacuated themselves before crews arrived. Firefighters also helped evacuate some residents from their suites, while others were able to shelter in their own neighborhoods.

Two people were assessed by paramedics at the scene but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported.

There are currently no damage estimates available.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
