A man found hiding suitcases and bags in the backseat of a car in Nanaimo has now been charged with drug trafficking.

In April, Nanaimo RCMP patrolling the city centre witnessed a “hand-to-hand” exchange of drugs for money in the front seats of a parked Mitsubishi at the intersection of Victoria Road and Selby Street.

Police pulled up behind the car and arrested the man and woman involved in the transaction.

Officers then searched the car and discovered the man had hidden.

Several swords, large knives, drug packaging materials and a drug suspected of being fentanyl were also found.

Raymond Gilliland, 51, was arrested on April 26 and remains in custody, police said.
