One of Canada’s most talked-about stars was just welcomed with open arms – and screaming fans.

Tate McRae played her first hometown show on Friday (July 5) at the Calgary Stampede. The LA-based musician, who had a major breakout year in 2023 with her Canadian Hot 100 No. 1 “Greedy,” performed chart-topping hits like “Exes” and “You Broke Me First” to a crowd that knew every word.

Surrounded by backup dancers and dressed in a glamorous miniskirt, fringed bracelets and, of course, boots, McRae brought pop star confidence to the Cowboys Music Festival stage.

She also took the time to speak candidly with the audience.

“I’ve been putting this show off for so long because I felt like I was going to shit my pants,” McRae said. “We’re finally here, we’re doing it,” she continued, “It’s crazy — I’m so proud to be from Calgary.”

But returning to Calgary can also be disorienting for McRae. “There’s so many memories and, you know, things in my head that I associate with this place, so many songs that I’ve written about this place,” she said. “Every time I come home, I feel like the annoying little sister, a f–king pain in the ass to my parents, and I regress to all my old high school habits,” she continued, guessing that some in the audience could relate.

McRae channeled those feelings into writing “Calgary,” from her 2023 album Think laterand after that vulnerable introduction, she sang that song for the first time in the city of the same name — to an audience that was happy to have her back.
