Pro-Palestinian demonstration continues at Memorial University

Pro-Palestinian demonstration continues at Memorial University

A noisy group of pro-Palestinian protesters descended on the MUN Arts and Administration building this morning, demanding that university officials meet with organizers to discuss their demands.

Protests have been taking place on campus for weeks, with calls for the university to disclose its investments and divest from companies with ties to Israel, such as arms manufacturers.

Three students were charged with trespassing over the weekend after the RNC was called in to help break up the protest amid safety concerns following an inspection by St. John’s Regional.

The university says students were given ample time and warning, but organizers claim they received little notice.

Inspired by the events of last weekend, the protesters returned to the Art and Administration building this morning.

Sadie Mees, who helps organize the protests, explains why it is important to continue the demonstrations.

She claims that MUN is “complicit” in the horrors of war in the Middle East because it has not divested itself of all ties to Israeli companies.

The university has met with the group several times and has made commitments to some of their demands, which you can read here.
