Crystal Palace have just brought back Jean-Philippe Mateta from Paris, where he was staying for the Olympic Games.

Thierry Henry included the Crystal Palace No. 14 in his France squad – normally an U23 selection – as one of his permitted overage players.

Now Jean-Philippe Mateta has left the French camp to return to Crystal Palace, but why? Let’s take a look…

Why Crystal Palace recalled Jean-Philippe Mateta

According to a story from L’Equipe, Crystal Palace have recalled the Frenchman to undergo a medical at the club’s Copers Cope training complex in Beckenham.

However, this is not a situation unique to Mateta.

Fitness staff at Crystal Palace are currently assessing the level of each player as Oliver Glasner prepares for pre-season training.

Mateta is no exception, despite his participation in the Olympics. The 27-year-old will be in London until Friday for medicals. This means he will miss France’s final warm-up match against the Dominican Republic before the competition opens on Wednesday, July 24 against the United States.

L’Equipe do not explain Henry’s position on the matter, although the situation in the French camp seems quite relaxed at the moment, with the 46-year-old having already flown Michael Olise to Germany to complete his £50.8m move to Bayern Munich.

Wise decision by Oliver Glasner

If Henry leads France all the way to Paris this summer, Mateta is likely to miss our opening game of the 2024/25 Premier League season against Brentford, which falls on Sunday 18 August.

The final of the Olympic Football Games will take place on Saturday, August 10.

Mateta is likely to get some time off after that, so if he doesn’t sacrifice it, the man from Sevran is likely to miss the Brentford match.

It was therefore vital that Glasner did not let his talisman fall further behind Crystal Palace’s pre-season preparations by missing his medicals and we are pleased that he has been recalled.

Hopefully Mateta’s physical condition looks good and he can lead France to gold at the Olympic Games.
