A new storm system is expected to bring freezing rain and high winds to southwestern Ontario this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a special weather warning Thursday for a large swath of the province, from Windsor to Ottawa and as far north as Timmins. The Waterloo region, Guelph, Wellington County, Brantford, Woodstock, Listowel, Stratford and Goderich are included in the warning.

The agency expects freezing rain on Saturday and snow in some areas that will quickly turn into sleet.

Environment Canada says the precipitation could last for several hours before turning to showers by the afternoon.

In addition to the freezing rain, the agency also expects strong wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h on Saturday afternoon and evening.

The combination of rain and wind can lead to local power outages.

Environment Canada says there is “still uncertainty about the exact location and timing of any freezing rain and the duration and location of the strongest winds.”
